Waterford IT and TSSG invest in new Network Infrastructure with eircom

eircom today announced that it has successfully provided a future-proofed network infrastructure to the Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) and Telecommunications Software and Systems Group (TSSG), their research and development centre. The investment, exceeding a quarter of a million euro was made to efficiently service the growing population of more than 12,000 students, researchers and staff at the college, both now and into the future.

The network infrastructure will enhance communications services like Internet access speeds, wireless and mobility at the college.   It will also improve operational efficiencies and reduce running costs. This investment also enhances TSSG’s technical capabilities to help them to compete with research centres in countries like France and Germany for future research projects.

“We have had a long term successful relationship with eircom”, said Aidan McGrath. IT manager, WIT.  “We selected them as our strategic partner to design this solution because they understand our business and know our network.  eircom has proven over the years to be a valuable partner and trusted advisor to us.”

eircom designed the entire network infrastructure upgrade for WIT, including its new building on the campus which also hosts their world class data centre. The network infrastructure is a 10GB backbone for the campus and is based on Cisco Systems technology.  As part of the solution, eircom has provided a wireless upgrade and will also provide a web content filtering and security solution for the college population.

Commenting on the announcement, Alex Campbell, sales director, major accounts and Government, eircom Business, said: “WIT and TSSG needed a flexible and resilient network infrastructure for its growing population of students and researchers.  We are delighted to have designed this solution which brings greater operational efficiencies to the college.”

This solution builds upon the four-year contract originally won in 2006 by the eircom-owned Lan Communications [now fully integrated into eircom] to supply and install networking systems for the WIT campus expansion.  WIT also recently awarded another four year contract to eircom in September 2010.
