Today eircom launched the 2013 eircom Junior Spider Awards which sees the awards enter their fourth year. The eircom Junior Spider Awards were established to highlight how primary and post primary students embrace the internet and to mark the innovative ways they use it both in school and in their daily lives.
The awards are divided into three categories The Mega Spiders at primary level and the Giga and Tera Spiders at post primary level. The Giga Spiders are open to 1st to 3rd year students and the Tera Spiders are to 4th to 6th year students. Each award category has a Grand Prix Award.
CoderDojo founder James Whelton (previous eircom Junior Spider Award winner and this year’s winner of the eircom Spider Internet Hero Award) was on hand to help launch the awards. “The internet is such an important part of our lives and it is fantastic that students have the opportunity to explore their interest and develop their skills through the eircom Junior Spider Awards. The awards were a great platform for me to showcase my coding skills and helped me start my career as an internet entrepreneur. The students who enter the Junior Spider Awards could be a future eircom Spider Award winner like I was this year. I encourage all students that have an interest and are excited about the internet to get involved,” said James.
Carolan Lennon, chief commercial officer, consumer, eircom and chairperson of the eircom Junior Spider Awards Judging Panel said, “Our Junior Spider awards are a really important way of getting students interested in the internet and are also a way to help them develop the skills and interests they have in the online world. James Whelton is an example of how exciting a career in the internet can be. Last year we had fantastic entry levels and we are eager to see what the students do this year. The awards are growing each year which shows the value students, their teachers and parents put on winning an eircom Junior Spider Award.”
